Aaron McGruder On His Search For The Perfect Voice For Huey!

When we watch animated shows, we often tend to focus more on the characters and their storylines, and in the process, we end up disregarding the voices behind them. But when you come to think of it, the voices are the most important part of any animated show.

That’s why, when the creator of The Boondocks, Aaron McGruder was set to begin the production of the show, the greatest roadblock on his path was that of finding an appropriate voice for one of the show’s characters, Huey.

While Regina King had served as a perfect choice for the character of Huey’s brother Riley, Huey was yet to find a voice that would suit his personality, while also complimenting the voice of Riley.

Aaron reveals that they went into an elaborate search for the perfect voice for the role, but all to no avail. Regina was also a part of the search, and when nothing else seemed to work out, Aaron had a brainwave.

He asked Regina to try and see if she could voice both the characters simultaneously. Even though the veteran actress wasn’t too excited about the offer, she ultimately agreed and enthusiastically embarked upon the experiment.

Recalling the incident, Aaron says that he was thoroughly impressed by Regina’s spirit, and as she brilliantly switched between both the voices, all the cast members agreed that she was the perfect choice for both the roles.

The rest, as they say, is history!
